In this article, we will briefly see SEO techniques. As a part of digital marketing, once you have decided to do SEO for your business website, it is essential to know key techniques to be implemented.
At very high level, SEO work can be fractioned into 3 parts –
1. Getting keywords
2. On-page SEO
3. Off-page SEO (link building)
Let’s see these briefly –
1. Getting keywords
These are the days when people may have already googled for something that your business offers, your website URL may not have caught their attention; not being displayed in optimum vision area (say, top 5 links) and may have opted for other website URLs. This is an opportunity lost by your business.
Now, let’s see the other end of this. If you are offering food delivery in Thane and your business website ranked at top while searching food delivery in Pune. Will your website be considered? Though SEO worked, did it manage to get you order?
With this, we come to very basic of SEO technique – Getting appropriate keywords for your website. This requires research work in terms of which customers your are targeting, whether it is location specific, does age of customer matter, does gender of customer matter?
People search for general information and search to purchase a product. Say, your website has both. Then, it matters that appropriate keywords are implemented to show results as per just information or as per specific purchase.
Build your keyword list accordingly, say start with “Food delivery in Thane”. Add synonyms, say “Food delivery in Thana”. Add qualifiers, say “free food delivery in Thane”.
It will ensure that your website still ranks at top, for these minor differences given in keyword search.
2. On-page SEO
Now that you got keywords, is it what you will hog in your entire web page to be found in search engine result? Fact is that search engine rule disqualifies such websites from ranking higher. So have clean contents that have keywords in place just wherever needed appropriately.
Apart from this, there are some technical parts of your website that can be touched upon to promote your ranking. It is called on-page SEO.
Simple one to start is Page Titles. Add keywords in your webpage titles.
Page heading <h1> and <h2> can next be used with keywords.
Also, use <meta> tags with keywords.
Next, can be used are ALT and other attributes. Add keywords there.
These are minor things in terms of SEO, but still count. Key is to keep your content still readable rather than a laundry list of keywords popping everywhere, making your business website look awful and unprofessional.
3. Off-page SEO
Google gives weightage to your website rank based on other links pointing to it. It is called PageRank. Consider it as voting, where each link pointing to your URL is a vote you get to increase your chances of winning election (search result). This link building is called off-page SEO.
This is trickier. There are already established popular websites. What if they have a link to your website? That increases you being found in search result more, but of course how you manage to get listed in popular site is a real challenge. To start with, you can have it published in different blog sites, technical forums. You may request other website to list you, in turn, you list them.
These are all external linking techniques.
Other option is to have internal linking. This has minor impact but still useful. Your internal pages will have links to your other internal pages. But of course, a third party recommending your website has more weightage.
